Upstream is a Python web app that is launched from a command line and used in a browser tab; this is a single program installed from the Microsoft Store, with no Docker, no local server to manage and no cloud account. How it works Describe the video in one line. A language model of your choosing drafts the narration and works out which stock clips it needs, so there is no guessing at what a footage library calls the shot you had in mind. Footage arrives from Pexels, Pixabay, or a folder of your own video files. The voice-over can be recorded and heard on its own first, with its duration shown, before anything else is committed. An optional review step then puts every downloaded clip on screen to be reordered, swapped or dropped. Finally FFmpeg, which ships inside the application, cuts each clip to the narration, burns in the captions you styled, mixes a background track and writes an MP4 at 9:16, 16:9 or 1:1. Where the work happens This is the difference from browser-based tools. Processing is local, on the machine's own processor. Credentials belong to the operator, are stored in a configuration file in their own app data folder, and are billed by each provider directly with nothing marked up in between. Finished videos are written to a folder on the machine. There is no upload step, no rendering queue, no seat count, no watermark, and nothing about the videos produced is metered or reported. Twenty-three language-model providers are supported, among them OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Groq and OpenRouter, plus a local Ollama that requires no key and sends nothing off the machine. The model picker can filter to models that cost nothing to call. Narration uses Edge text-to-speech at no cost and with no account; Azure Speech and ElevenLabs are available to those who hold keys. Licensing and cost The application is free under the GNU General Public Licence version 3, with a commercial licence available on request for uses that licence does not permit. Neither claims any right over the videos produced, including videos that are sold or monetised. There is one edition, no trial period and no tier above it. Requirements and limits Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11. There is no macOS, Linux, web or mobile version. Encoding uses the video encoder built into Windows, so no dedicated graphics card is required. Subtitle fonts shipped with the application cover Latin, Vietnamese and Thai scripts; Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic and Greek are not covered.
