You're right that category codes (or parents codes as they're called in NVivo) cannot be directly applied to quotations, but whenever you drag-and-drop a category onto a quotation, it automatically gives you the option to select which sub-code of that category you want to attach. Later, you can easily explore quotations at the sub-code or code category level. And as you very well pointed out, you can indicate classification of cases (i.e., documents in ATLAS.ti) by creating document groups.

For example, you can filter for specific parts of speech and only see adjectives, nouns, or any other part of speech of interest. ATLAS.ti can also group words together by their inflected forms (such as words in past, present, and future tense), which is a great help for decluttering and gaining a better understanding. Besides seeing word frequencies of entire documents, it's easy to create a word cloud from specific codes or documents, which permits a more focused analysis on a subset of data. Word clouds can also be edited with stop/go lists, exported as images, and more. If you are not seeing a particular feature, we kindly recommend downloading all the latest updates to the software so that you can enjoy the full host of features (ATLAS.ti licenses offer access to all features on all platforms for one flat fee).
