An amazing tool for learning languages

It is a great tool for beginners, the notifications help the user stay motivated and compromised. It is very easy to use and the ux is great.

Pros

I love how easy and intuitive it is, it's fun to practice and it keeps me motivated.

Cons

It can feel a little boring after some time because the exercises are the same.

Have fun and learn more with Duolingo.

My experience was awesome and I learned French and really improved my English. Kudos Duolingo.

Pros

Duolingo is a fun and very effective learning platform. The fact that I can access or even do lessons on my phone makes Duolingo so magnificent. Learning different languages in one platform is so incredible,i highly appreciate it's existence.

Cons

I can now fluently communicate in French after using Duolingo. I can't complain.

Duolingo is for beginners and thats it.

In the beginning (with a paid membership) the lessons are helpful to start to build a single word understanding. The problem is with syntax and grammar, there is no explanation or way to get help when the app forces you to complete a lesson. It will just repeat over and over gain until you "copy" the answer but never helps you understand the problem. I am 253 consistent days in on a paid account for Duolingo to learn Italian and have hit a major brick wall for the past 60 days. At this point, the disjointed lessons have no bearing on life or real world conversations and offer no explanations to grammar or syntax. While I already knew some words and phrases, Duolingo's paid version has done nothing to get me from a basic understanding to an intermediate level. Making friends in the app is no help since you can not talk with them and the Lilly "AI" bot is highly limited. Duolingo has some nice things about it, but for the person who is looking to become fluent in a language, this is not the program. Unless you are speaking with a human or have exercise programs to help with common everyday situations, words and phrases, Duoling is just not that program. I gave this app great hope, but it has seriously let me down. There is no way to tailor your lessons or have it learn where you need help and because it forces you to give and answer you do not understand the question or phrase, there is no way to actually learn. On a scale from 1 to 10 I give Duolingo a 4 and lower if someone if looking to become fluent.

Pros

The interface is easy to follow. Some features help to remember words and some simple things like Hello, How are you?, Excuse me or Please and Thank You.

Cons

Lessons have no bearing on real world situations or conversational learning. Many of the lessons just spit out nonsense phrases with no ability to get a full translation and force a user to answer when they don't even understand the question.

Great tool Duolingo

Great, enjoying a lot in my journey of learning the Spanish language.

Pros

It's a perfect tool to learn new language and it's skills

Cons

Some lessons repeat phrases and expressions used, but maybe it's a good thing as it ensures that the word is learnt, I don't really have a bad words to say about Duolingo as it's a great tool to learn

My experience learning with Duolingo

Useful, interactive and striking app to learn languages.

In my opinion it teaches different languages in a basic level, sometimes the sentences are to standard, it would be better if it has some more “colloquial” teaching.

Pros

Friendly and interactive app for learning multiple languages in a funny way. The more lessons I complete, I can move forward in different divisions competing with other learners and friends.

Cons

I have to collect hearts or lives in order to continue a lesson. Any mistake is a life lost, therefore, once I run out of hearts I have to stop or do other tasks to get more.

OK, but won't make you fluent in another language.

It's good to help you to get started and to really have a form of a digital immersive experience, but it is not enough. I do miss lessons and I don't think it is a path to true fluency. I think you still need a tutor to learn the language fully, but Duolingo does help and has its place as a filler or on-the-go learning.

Pros

There is a lot of repetition so you learn the vocabulary very well. The repetition also means that you learn which words are of the male or female form - where relevant (I'm learning Spanish). With the amount of repetition of sentences, the grammar of the language starts to become intuitive without being taught explicitly.

Cons

The gamification. It is not motivating for me. I actually find it a waste of time and irritating. I don't like that you are stuck at levels and can't manually progress.

Review - Duolingo

I use Duolingo since 6-7 years and I use it everyday since 4 years

Pros

In Duolingo, my favorite feature is the the variety of language that you can learn of the application. I also like a lot the new feature for the English where you work only the similar sound in 2 words.

Cons

I think Duolingo has not too much fault on the application but for example in Swedish, the traduction is not perfect if you check in the dictionary the traduction is wrong. With the number of language I think it's normal to find some errors.

Duolingo is great

The social element is great. you can support other learners with motivation and gaming elements to keep everyone going. This has made it more enjoyable.

Pros

Gamification is critical to learning. Having a point system where you can customize the owl or unlock lessons is motivating.

Cons

The app can be very navigational. Also, if you don't log on for a while, your account is removed, or at least that has been my experience.

Effective app for learning a language

I used it to gain a conversational knowledge of Italian. I quickly progressed from single words to short daily-use phrases. While far from fluent, I noticed I could understand more spoken Italian than before, with some "gaps" filling in simply because I understood more of the context of the conversation

Pros

Spaced repetition and gamifying learning a language

Cons

It tends to be overly-busy in its interface, which can be distracting or even off-putting

The best language learning tool!

Very good! Currently trying to learn Spanish, it's easy to comprehend how the app works.

Pros

The best language learning tool out there no doubt. Very easy to use, has a vast variety of languages to choose from.

Cons

Don't like the premium functions have a cost, but I suppose it makes sense for an app so successful.

Best Language Learning App

I can't forget this one time when I couldn't believe I understood full sentences in Spanish, and Duolingo stated that I was only 23% fluent in Spanish. I thought it wasn't much until I shocked myself by fully understanding what those full sentences were saying. Duolingo seems so easy in terms of making it a kind of game in learning and the next thing you know, you can easily understand the language. I appreciate the reminders as well, they can be persistent but do mean nothing but well.

Pros

I've been using Duoling for 9 years now and appreciate how I can easily retain the lessons about foreign languages I thought would be hard to learn. I love the fact that I can not only track my progress but the app itself is encouraging, it shows you how far you've come and how much you've learned. You won’t even feel that you've been learning for quite some time now because the tests and assessments appear to be easy but then the next thing you know, you'll be able to read and comprehend sentences in a foreign language you are learning.

Cons

As a user of Duolingo for 9 years, I can't say anything against it because it helps me learn a new language. I can easily change the language I want to learn whenever I want to.

Great for staying fresh and learning the basics

I am grateful for Duolingo all in all. I can hold minor conversations in Spanish thanks mostly to this app. I highly recommend and will still use until I feel and stay fluent. Unless, I find something better which seems unlikely.

You WILL absolutely need other ways to study the language to become fluent in tandem with this app.

Pros

It is Free! Love that. I have used the free version for 7 years now. I am really grateful for the program and have gotten very far in learning Spanish. The daily streak keeps me doing it daily. I have only missed a handful of days in 7-8 years.

Cons

Verb conjugation is really POOR in Duo. No overall reviews of each verb. I wish they had full lessons dedicated to just verb conjugation. It really only teaches you based on pure memorization. Which is good, until you realize how much more you need to REALLY learn a language. For audio I wish you could control the speed. On audio lessons the normal speed is for fluent locals and the slow speed is for pure beginners. I need a mid speed so I can learn to get faster. So the other con is being able to keep up in conversation with native speakers.

Duolingo, language learning app.

Duolingo is great, I speak French, but I continue to use Duolingo daily so I can learn new words. My parents speak French and they tend to say words that I'm unsure of, but with a Duolingo lesson, I'm a star at speaking French.

Pros

I like that I was able to learn a language or some words from a language that I wanted to learn. What I also really liked most about Duolingo was the reminders that they give you if you miss a day or two.

Cons

You can only learn some words and some vocabulary and it's not really accurate to how the language could be spoken today. Another thing is that Duolingo focuses more on English speakers.

My own experience.

It's completely free.
Platform has a clean layout and straightforward interface, easy to use.
As it looks a lot like a game, it is quite fun and almost addictive.
It has motivation tools, such as the possibility of sharing results on Facebook, in addition to the rewards received.

Pros

What I like most about the Duolingo app is that the lessons are like a phase. This way it doesn't get boring to learn.

Cons

The only thing I like least is that there's no way to interact with anyone, but other than that, I think it's a good way to learn.

Good for drilling lame for learning.

Low average. The language I’m proficient in, it’s handy if annoying. The one I have some instruction in, it’s good for vocabulary. The one I don’t know the grammar going in, it sucks.

Pros

The lessons are bite-sized. You can maintain a certain level of profiency with a small daily dose.

Cons

If you don’t already know the grammar, their pedagogy is awful: scattered, incomplete, and rigid even when wrong. (I suspect plenty of their French, and unnatural English is all too common.). They used to have a discussion section where you could bring up problems, or get explanations of underinstructed areas from the user community. It’s gone now.

Learning can be fun

Very pleasant, the first platform that allowed me to get back to learning languages, I can't thank them enough!

Pros

I always found learning languages to be quite the chore, exams, tests and whatnot, for someone with an actual phobia of exams (long story, horrible experience in school), this is the only platform that allowed me to learn a language and not feel like I'm learning anything, the gamification is on a whole new level, Thank you Duolingo team for allowing me to learn and actually enjoy learning!

Cons

Most users abuse the leaderboard, this is not much of a problem, all one has to do is turn their account private and learn in peace.

Duolingo Connect

I do not really use this product as part of my work as technical support, I only use this as a personal self-study language learning tool. However, I would still say that it helped me a lot to gain confidence that I can learn languages. It helped me with English and Japanese a lot, and that is very helpful since I work for an international account. I have been using the application since December 2019 and I come and go with using it and I am happy that even though sometimes there is a time that I'm gonna gone for a long time, my account is still there. They kept it and I am happy for that.

Pros

I learned Japanese using Duolingo, it's funny because I took Japanese when I was in elementary and college and yet I feel like I learn more from the app. It's a good use for self-study users and users who are using it to complement their academics.

Cons

I am not quite fond of the stories and conversation exercises that you can take and play besides the lesson tests, the reason is some of the words are too advance for beginners.

Pros

Super to easy to use and access anywhere and everywhere. I use Duolingo even on my downtime as it is easily accessible on my smart phone. There is also a large variety of languages to chose from. I have a cousin who learned the basics of Italian before heading to Italy and it made her experience in Italy fun because of it.
