Data moves a lot.  We transfer data intra-company, inter-company, to/from cloud, to/from IoT devices.  Yet transferring data is slow and unsecure.  We need a robust upgrade to delimited data files to handle the quantity and sensitivity of today’s data.

At Exponam, we have created a new type of data file – tailor made for today’s data.  Our data file, a .BIGTM file, is highly compressed and is optimized for efficient extract and import.  It can be used to transport, distribute, share, store, download, and explore hundreds of millions of rows quickly and easily.  In tests, a .BIG file is blazingly fast when transferring ultra-large data sets – transferring in minutes, data that took hours or days in other formats.  

.BIG files are tamper-proof and their provenance is guaranteed.  The publisher is certifiable and both the file properties and data are unalterable. 

Accessing Interchange Data

.BIG file generation can be fine-tuned to optimize file size and data query performance.  Files which are immediately extracted, in full, to a destination data structure are optimized for the smallest size and rapid extract.  On the other end of the spectrum, files which are used as a distributed data source for query and analysis are optimized for fastest query – with query performance often exceeding database performance.
.BIG files are accessed directly via Java or C\# native APIs and via Exponam QueryTM (a JDBC interface).  The file is never decompressed or unencrypted.  Technical users can query .BIG files with full ANSI SQL syntax, enabling a truly distributed data query architecture.  Data analysts can create complex visualizations via a Business Intelligence tool like Tableau or Qlik.  And Exponam Query executes with the performance of a database – orders of magnitude faster than querying traditional CSVs.  


Data Security
Data is not secure.  Once downloaded or extracted from a secure repository, we lose centralized control.  Edge Data’s threat surface is massive, continuously in motion, and virtually unaddressed.
.BIG files are fully secure – exceeding today’s security demands around information.  And they stay secure.  You never unencrypt/decompress .BIG like with other compression options.  Exponam .BIG files are secure at rest, in process, and in transit.
Edge Data files sitting in email, on laptops, and in the cloud are a security risk as long as they exist.  A file which was downloaded or shared one day can be compromised years later.  Exponam .BIG files can be generated with specified durations for file access – from hours to days or years.  Even more, .BIG files can be dynamically controlled – enabling user specific entitlements and access rights.

Costs of Data Transfer
Numerous considerations factor into the full cost associated with transferring data:
- Egress fees related to cloud download ($.08/GB)
Time-to-value for accessing data. There is value in having data available for query and analysis quickly.  Data available in an hour may be worth more than data available in 2 hours or an extra day.  
- Operational cost and risk. Operational processes that run late have associated operational cost overruns.  Likewise, operational risk associated with late/missing data could have very high associated costs.
- Security risk. Compromised data can carry significant security risk costs.  At the low end, data is valuable and by being compromised, that value is partially or substantially lost.  At the high end, client data is protected by commercial contract and government privacy regulations.  Running afoul of any of these can result in massive fines and even business-ending litigation.
- Bandwidth and Storage (which are often the only factors taken into consideration)
