About Carlson Takeoff

Carlson Takeoff is an on-premise 3D takeoff solution developed for design/build firms, earthwork/excavating, engineers, heavy/highway contractors, paving and utility contractors. It enables users to accurately estimate cuts and fills using various sources including CAD, paper plans, PDF, TIFF and more. The software allows users to convert plans from 2D to 3D, modify linework and drawing cleanups such as removing wrong elevations, empty layers and invalid linework. Carlson Software also features the ability to develop machine control models in Topcon, Trimble, Leica or Carlson format. The software comes with standard AutoCAD OEM or IntelliCAD and can run on various Windows platforms. It can automatically trace linework in a PDF and "Merge Raster Files" allows users to combine multiple sheets at their match lines. Volume reports include Subgrade volumes, Cut/Fill volumes, Strata volumes, Over-Excavate volumes and Topsoil Removal/Replacement.

Great product with constant innovations

Pros

We had Mark Carlson do a special training for our team on how to utilize the product effectively. As a small firm, this product was a great addition to our toolkit, because of the features it provided for the price. The Carlson team has a stellar customer service department, I've called them multiple times over the phone and I always get hold of a tech within 5 min and they have been able to resolve the issue every time. Furthermore, the capability of Carlson to work on top of AutoCAD really helps.

Cons

We've had stability issues when running Carlson on AutoCAD, however, Carlson with IntelliCAD has been great so far. But the transfer of drawings between IntelliCAD and AutoCAD is never smooth, it always creates issues in terms of the layout/paper space.

Great overall product

Pros

CAD based - if you know CAD this is easy
Help Desk - They are great at getting me answers right away and helping me learn the software
Tutorials - They have many that can make learning a lot easier

Cons

CAD based - if you don't know CAD this can be a bit of a pain
No one else at my company wants to learn it so I'm stuck with it all, it gets to be a lot of work for each project
I'm on R7 and they have R9, so many of the things i was going to say here were taken care of
