Free Linux OS, built for developers

Fedora Workstation is the best Linux OS for developing cutting-edge applications.

Pros

Fedora Workstation is an open-source operating system for personal computers. Best suited for developers who want to implement cutting-edge Linux features. Sleek GNOME desktop environment, open-source utilities, scriptable virtualization, and OCI image support are the best features of the Fedora Workstation.

Cons

It's less stable and slower than similar operating systems like Ubuntu and CentOS. Minor display bugs when running applications. Lacks minimize and maximize buttons for a window.

Alternatives Considered

Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Manjaro, Oracle Linux and Windows 10

Reasons for Choosing Fedora Workstation

Fedora Workstation supports the latest software updates, its GNOME desktop environment is clean and user-friendly. The community is active with a promise to update the OS every six months.

Reasons for Switching to Fedora Workstation

We choose Fedora Workstation over other alternatives for its commitment to making a developer-friendly Linux operating system.

Fedora Workstation: The Free Linux Distribution with Great Desktop Interface and Tools

Great experience relying on the Fedora Workstation Linux distribution to teach operating system concepts to graduate and undergraduate students. The full power of a Linux system is combined with an appealing user interface and Gnome desktop environment.

Pros

Free. Fedoral Workstation is a free Linux distribution with no subscription fees or restrictions. It is designed with an appealing desktop interface that really compels first-time Linux users. I have used it to teach Operating System courses for undergraduate and graduate students and it provided the low level features of a Linux OS and the awesome Desktop interface. Concepts such as the Kernel, shell, access permissions, Inodes, virtual memory, paging, among others can be effectively demonstrated using this Linux distribution. On the other hand, students finds it very intuitive to use and easy to install, configure, and deploy. Very performance-efficient even on VMs and bootable USB sticks. The Fedora project is based on the stable Redhat linux distribution with more experimental tools and utilities. This makes it highly stable and reliable and open for researchers to inspect with its innovative experimental tools.

Cons

Not sure if this is a limitation, but the Fedora Workstation updates and releases are so frequent an make the user taken whether to keep following up with the release flow or sticking to an earlier stable version. A trade-off should be followed here based primarily on the environment or task involving Fedora.

Setup your development workstation with fedora

Its very good experience to use fedora as my workstation. Consume less resources so we can do our work fast and effective with less RAM.

Pros

Fedora is very good user interface. It is easy to use fedora as compared to other Linux OS. Good for developers to write code and provide all type of service which an Developer need. And even we can deploy our application on fedora. Fedora consume less resources as compared to windows os.

Cons

Something its getting stuck at login screen if you put wrong password. Settings up RDP confirmation is complex.

An operating system aimed at developers and digital content creators

I have used fedora for several years as an operating system for web development, being a stable and secure system for the same purpose and at the same time handling a number of libraries compatible with multiple programming languages.

In another scenario, I have used this Linux distribution as a base operating system to virtualize machines and create a host environment and VMs.

Pros

What I like the most is its friendly interface and totally oriented towards developers and the different integrations that we can carry out with products and programming tools.

Cons

So far I have only used it for a programming workstation and it has worked

Reasons for Choosing Fedora Workstation

This gives me a better user interface and integrations with other tools in an easier way to configure and manage

Review for Fedora Workstation

Fedora Workstation is great for end users who don't want to work as the terminal to perform all configuration tasks on Linux.

Pros

Easy to install, use, manage, update and upgrade the system. For new Linux users, it has a graphical interface that demands little cognitive load to learn the system.

Cons

Some packages become obsolete in a short time and stop updating in the standard repository, so I recommend using LTS (Long Term Support) versions.

Alternatives Considered

Ubuntu

Reasons for Switching to Fedora Workstation

The system appears to be less burdened with pre-installed software than standard Ubuntu versions.

Fedora is a solid operating system, ideal for system admins that also work on CentOS or Redhat

Solid operating system that is easy to use for beginners while providing the speed and advanced features needed for system administrators.

Pros

Love the up to date releases, the quickness of the software and the ease of installation.

Cons

I upgraded to the beta for 36 and had some issues. 35 was very solid but with the issues I had during beta of 36 I opted to install another OS for one of my laptops used in the field.

Alternatives Considered

Ubuntu

Reasons for Switching to Fedora Workstation

Most systems I work on are centos or redhat based operating systems so using a redhat based os seemed prudent.

Fedora made me switch from ubuntu

I started in linux since the beginning of ubuntu, but since the introduction of unity and later snap I decided to try other distributions. Fedora is without a doubt the most solid, fast and easy distribution I have found.

Pros

Very compact, error-free, very fast distribution with a very efficient and comfortable use of flat packages. The ubuntu snap package management was a problem for me because it gave errors from time to time.

Cons

It's not directly a Fedora problem, but the gnome desktop could evolve a bit faster. Year after year the number of features added is less and less and from being an innovative desktop to lagging behind even with windows.

Easy and fast operating system

Overall, if it is the first linux operating system you use, I do not recommend it, now if you are looking for an optimal operating system to program this may be an option

Pros

It is an easy to use operating system, very safe and stable. It also has a customizable interface.

Cons

At first use it is not very user-friendly, it has a somewhat complex interface, but it is easy to adapt to it.

Fedora Workstation: Compelling Linux Desktop Environment with Open-source Background

Very good experience for everyday use and for development in prominent programming languages. Amazing desktop interface.

Pros

Beautiful desktop interface that really surpasses competing desktop environments on Windows, Mac, and even on other Linux distributions. The system is built on open-source apps and services which makes it cost effective and accessible. Many usability and productivity apps makes Fedora Workstation a leading project and a major contributor to the continuous Linux advancements. I used Fedora as an everyday desktop environment. I definitely miss the versatility of a Microsoft Office suite but still many alternative collaboration and productivity apps are available for Fedora. I did a lot of development in Python, C++, and Java. I used different IDEs (NetBeans, Eclipse, PyCharm,...) in app development and Fedora was really providing a great experience. I highly recommend it for users planning to migrate from Windows or Mac OSX.

Cons

I suffered a bit with driver installations mainly for Bluetooth wireless interface cards and audio interfaces. Many tuning, configuration, and workarounds were needed to make devices work smoothly.

An operating system I trust my development job on it!

I believe the Fedora Workstation is one of the most reliable and stable Linux distros that's aimed at making developer lives a lot easier. I have always loved Fedora and always recommend it to my colleagues and friends.

Pros

It's a free operating system that has great support and a fantastic community behind it.
The updates are frequent and for a developer, it's a must to be able to grab and install the latest packages easily through the package management system. This makes Fedora my favourite distro over the competitors.
It's has always been very reliable and robust since the day that I've started using it and the team behind the Fedora Workstation are always working hard to keep the os feature-rich and stable.
I love the way that Fedora Workstation manages the resources on my machine as it only takes very little resources to handle the essential processes that the os depends on and leaves you with a massive amount of free resources available at your fingertip.
It's always updated with cutting edge technology and always introduces the most recent ones in a way that its stability, reliability and safety isn't affected.

Cons

There are times that the dependent packages aren't pushed to the repository and you'd have to wait before being able to fully update your installed packages.

Everybody can enjoy the benefits of it.

It has revolutionized how I do my work and has been a true lifesaver for me.

Pros

I've been a Fedora Workstation user for the past few years and I love it. It's a perfect balance of power, flexibility, and more. It's easy to use out of the box and you can configure it to be as simple or as advanced as you want. In my opinion, this is the best Linux distro available today.

Cons

Fedora Workstation is perfect for any developer who wants a balance between features and usability. And if you're just looking for a workstation that does it all, Fedora Workstation is ideal.
